Trisha stares and then puts her finger to her chin thoughtfully.

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PAGE. THE EXPRESSIONS. LITTLE ED’S RIDIC DETERMINATION. LITTLE AL’S CUTIE GOBSMACKED REATIONS. Trisha just being like “…huh.”

You can see this is the exact moment where Ed was like “okay, this is my little brother and nobody will mess with him and I WILL LOVE AND PROTECT HIM and I WILL GIVE UP MY LIMBS FOR HIM IF THAT’S WHAT IT TAKES AND”. Coming to love Al was coupled with having to realize that his Mom loved him no matter what, and that doing good by her also meant accepting Al. That’s why he felt like he failed Al when Al got hurt on his watch, that’s why he was so serious about protecting him- this was one of the first things he learned from his Mom (and though he’d never admit it, his dad), this was one of his first steps to growing up, probably the most important lesson he felt he learned- protect your little brother. That’s your job. So when he failed to do that, he felt like he’d betrayed the most important truth he’d ever known and let down his entire family- not just Al, but his Mom too.

 #okay this is like my favorite panel of all time (i mean last chapter excluded) #and i dont think i can actually explain why without just dying basically #i feel like this encapsulates their relationship so well #the playfulness and ease they have with each other #but there is something so fundamentally sweet in this action to me #like i can just feel the BROTHERLY LOVE shooting rays straight at my face #rays of feelings#and i mean this whole scene and panel is mostly about winry and it’s the back motif again but also #little moments like these really flesh out and add to ed and al’s dynamic for me#they love each other so fucking much #they are everything to each other and even though they’ve been through such horrific shit together #shit that anyone would be perpetually weighed down by #i think they balance each other out and make each other realize how much they love being alive #and it makes me feel like being alive too #which is why this series is the best #the end #ok this is all happening  but i think i have to go and have a good cry about the elric brothers now bye #the greatest fictional brothers
